Hanging Drywall Vertically

Imagine a wall that is 8 feet top to bottom and 16 feet side to side with no fixtures. Keeping the footage of seams to a minimum will result in less taping and a better looking finished job.

In this case 4 full sheets of drywall hung horizontally would fill the entire wall.

Hanging drywall vertically. Also when drywall is installed horizontally you end up with an unsupported joint between each stud. Or in otherwords why do drywall contractors always hang drywall horizontally. If fastened vertically every edge will land securely on a stud.

Fewer seams horizontal hanging reduces the lineal footage of seams by about 25. For walls nine feet high or shorter hanging the drywall horizontally has a number of benefits. Last edited by mtplus.

You would be left one long bevel joint of 16 feet and one butt joint of 8 feet to tape and mud not counting the corners. I know it is easier for drywall installers to install and finish horizontally but this method adds difficulty for trim carpenters and i think adds weakness to the wall as well. Hang the drywall vertically in rooms with high ceilings like foyers and open two story living areas.

But for the majority of rooms including bathrooms hallways and areas where the walls are shorter than nine feet hanging drywall horizontally is your best bet. Does hanging drywall vertically versus horizontally cause problems.
